An open invitation to any nerdy techies out there.
"You supply the Time Machine, I'll buy the dinner." Contact BC Dave.
Any of the following offers sounds good. Set the year for 1994.
Or we'll just go to the Cal Neva. |

More dining choices.. (from old fun books)
And a drink at sunset?
I used this last coupon many times for a sunset Mai Tai in that beautiful roof-top bar. A nice break from the gambling. |

Man, you don't find deals like that any more. As luck would have it, I found a time machine and you don't have to buy the meals. The time machine is also a money machine:

Ok John,
Looks like you've brought the machine home. Good thinking! and I know that can be a good one.
I'll hold up my end of the deal. Which of the above dining choices will it be? |

I found old "Fun and Games" & Best Bets" from 96-98
The Nevada Club Kilroy Killer Burger was "Regular $ 3.49, $ 2 off if you show any casino card or bowling ID.... total $ 1.49"
The Pioneer had Steak and Maine Lobster = $ 8.95
And the Silver Club had a $ 6.99 Steak buffet....with a BOGO free coupon in "Best Bets"
But MY ALL TIME favorite was the Sundowner: $ 6.99 Prime Rib with a killer Onion Soup...Reza was the Maitre d' and really upscaled the "GK Steakhouse". Reza MIGHT still be at the Peppermill steakhouse....he might remember the $ 2 bill guy that remembers him (I knew a few words of Farsi).
By the way:
"Fun and Games"= 24 pages
" Best Bets" = 59 pages
Shows: Charo @ Asuagga's Nugget, Foster Brooks @ Peppermill, American Superstars @ Flamingo, Bob Newhart & Bo Diddley @ Silver Legacy, Carlos Santana @ Hilton. |

J.D. I remember wailking into the Nevada Club in 1985 and being a little intimidated. This was bare bones, white knuckle gambling. Vinyl floors, flourescent lights and enough smoke to send Jerry packin'.
As the years went by I grew to love that old place. I'd always stop by and play the old mechanical one armed bandits upstairs, get a beer at the bomber bar and a piece of apple pie at Kilroy's.
Janice and I actually had that steak buffet out at the Silver Club. It was good value for the money.
I regretfully never made it to GK's Steak house. That cool old coffee shop always beckoned to me with the $1.99 spaghetti (later $2.99). It may be just me but I thought it was the best spaghetti I ever had at a restaurant. Some places, including so called Italian ones just seem to put some tomato sauce on noodles and that's spaghetti boy!
John, once you've mastered the time machine, here's an offer that's hard to beat. (Especially after getting sloshed at Shooter's and other bars.)
That's just back to early 2003. Just a small adjustment for the old time machine.
And another very cool link..http://www.visitreno.com/sundowner/index.htm |

My all time favorite.
I used to hang out a lot at the Cal Neva. They practically paid us Canadians to be loyal customers. Every day, during a stay, you could show your Canadian I.D. and get a little funbook with two free drinks, a BOGO free dinner (any dinner) in any of the restaurants and an entry into a monthly $500 draw.
So big spender Dave would take his lovely wife out for a first rate Prime Rib dinner at the Top Deck restaurant. I'd get the two free beers from the casino bar and then we'd have a pretty damn good salad bar and nice hunk of Prime Rib with all the fixin's. Total bill? About five bucks! And they would even take Canadian money at par. This was cheapskate heaven... but it really was quite good too. |

Imagine! Scores of casinos wanting your business so badly that they'll give you massively-subsidized meals, coupon books, and even free rooms without being some sort of heavy-hitter!
Mid-90's; the good ol' days! I couldn't have imagined then that Reno would seem so skinny now - it seemed as though the good times would never end, but that's the problem anytime times are good. |

I definitely remember those machines. Put in a lucky nickel for a chance at the huge jackpot: $37.50. Playing those mechanical machines (they didn't use any electricity whatsoever) was a herky-jerky physical workout. And the bright fluorescent light told you this wasn't some Vegas carpet joint, this was a place to go from broke to destitute.

Yep, Cal Neva was basically the southernmost point in Canada. Before every trip to Reno, my buddy from Skagway used to drive the 100 miles over the Klondike Highway to Whitehorse, convert his net worth from greenbacks to more colorful notes covered in geese, loons, and queens, and abuse the heck out of Cal Neva's liberal exchange rate. By himself, Daryl shoulders sole responsibility for the demise of the $1.50 dog and Heineken deal. |

You're right Shooty. The Cal Neva was extremely generous to Canadians and we took 'em for all the generosity they could handle. But hey, at least they're still open!
For those who would like a peek back at the Nevada club these two sites offer some interesting photos and information.
(1) http://www.sonic.net/~tdn/nevada/nevada1.html (This site is, in part anway, pretty depressing!) But the book mentioned at the bottom of the page is well, Just The Best!
(2) http://oldreno.net/nevadaclub.htm (This is a good one for the history buffs!) |

Thanks for the links. I own the Kling book about the rise of Reno. Great stuff, love the photos of funbook, menus, etc.
Thanks for the great read today. |
