So I'm already on my second day and failed to even start my running trip report.

From my house in Portland to the Reno Arch is 540 miles via Alturas and 524 via Eagle Lake and Susanville. But there's a hitch. The shorter version is only quicker IF IF IF you don't get stuck behind a slowpoke because that rou/cte has few safe place to pass.

How do you choose? (HINT); I picked wrong.

But at least I got a good laugh at the Harley's in the rainstorm.

First night at the Siena...who the hell are these people? I used to be a regular there and while I guess I am still a single diamond, I recognize no one and it's mutual.

I do my downtown stroll/card swipe tour with not too much to report.

But the comped red wine I carried into the top deck from the sky bridge bar was added ($4.99) to my Prime Rib Dinner . I guess they're trying to make up for those buckets of red plastic "free drink" tokens I passed over the years....I do believe I am now OUT.

Has anyone ever "Won" anything other than a $ 45 room rate coupon from the Treasure Cave at Eldorado? Not me, not ever.

But they have one of those craps machines at the Eldo and after dropping $40 in a half hour I parlayed my last $ 20 into $ 90 in about the same time. BEST INVENTION EVER.

OH...JERRY >>>HEY! JERRY: Siris has THE BEST Micro Brew selection on tap. (Laugh at 22 year old bartender when I ask him where the Prima Donna is)....He's never heard of it. No club cards there, YET. Looks like they are going to cater to the College crowd.\

Siriously Hot/Cold/Cheap drinks.

That reminds me.... I need a beer. And some more Atlantis money.

You guys wait right here...the good part is coming up...right John?
(feel free to jump in, everyone knows I need encouragement.

Be right back.
from the 9th floor of Atlantis.....JD out

Posted at 2:30 AM 30 Sept.

NOTHING is "FREE"

But the Atlantis has allowed me to briefly hold onto THEIR money....and it is my job to give my Atlantis money to the downtown casinos.

And some of the locals at the Oyster bar BAR....have remarkable livers.

More to follow.

(Way way UP....so far)

Details upon request.

This IS a small town...sitting at the oyster bar.....I hear a voice from behind me..."Do you have any $ 2 bills for sale.

Guess who it was and a "FREE" beer at brews Bros.

Bedtime now.

I know who came up behind you. It was Alison! Where's my free beer?

Good to hear you're ahead of the game. Makes for a much nicer trip.

Damn... it's almost checkout time...no time to get caught up on trip report.

Great trip so far. As I'm sitting at the Oyster bar, I hear a woman almost wisper in my ear, "Can I get some of those $ 2 bills ?"

It was the owners of THE RED DOG SALOON in VC... Loren & Sue

Small world. Gotta go.

Ok...I have aa lot of catching up to do.
Stop me if you've heard this before.
So first night at Atlantis...John meets me for a coupl;e of those bait wrapped in seaweed at the Oyster Bar.
I LOVE that bar for a couple of reasons.
1. Great bartenders and a chance to meet a bunch of locals.
2. View of Reno and another chance to make a bar bet on where the Prima Donna OR Hill Brothers Motor Lodge used to be.
3. Comped chow, comped room,
4. Natural Royal on 25 cents x 10 credits= $ 2k
5. Even won $ 125 at KENO. (Which I usually play just to help out the Keno runners
6. John went broke and left early
7. Did I mention TONY the bartender & newest member of the $ 2 Bill Club. Brian at the Cabaret bar has a way to go before passing Tony.
8. And ONLY dropped about $ 400 on the second night but met a couple of locals that were a HOOT....fun crowd. I recommend it BUT STAY away from the highly addictive Muti Strike Poker
downstairs near the coffee & Muffin Shop.
------------------
I TRY call John to meet at Peppermill (Cube bar with Neil) but he does NOT answer his phone. And my ONE beer with Neil at the Cube Bar cost me $ 100. Well, $ 102 if count bar tax.

So I guess the 2 fer GSR Buffet is out of the question too?

AND when Sands sends you an E MAIL comp room offer....YOU MUST HAVE IT PRINTED OUT IN HAND at check in. The confirmation number means NOTHING.

I had to go get my computer and fire it up at the hotel front desk which kind of seemed unreasonable....but it is how they roll. And it is FREE... so far.

More to follow.

(Should I wait for John to call or use up some comp meal at the Copa?

I believe I will have a drink first.

ONLY ONE FL:USH....so far. But it was 10 coins bet on quarters, AND I got a $ 500 4 aces w/kicker on dbl dbl bonus ($ 500 which is pretty much gone now), and a $ 125 4 of 4 Keno.

I have not yet tipped my hand on my offers.

I used my Atlantis "two free nights" in Sept. Mon & Tues.
Then two nights at Sands on an e mail offer
'Then POOF....it's now October and I just happen to have "Two free nights at Atlantis in October....and a different code on a Sands MAILER.

I was going to swipe at GSM but John was a no show, no call. I had a SINGLE $ 100 beer at Peppermill with Neil at the Cube bar wondering if John might show up or even answer his phone.

And the Siena no longer loves me. The feeling is mutual.

Machine craps makes a twenty go a LONG way.
If I were a dealer, I'd feel just like those Asian ladies that used to push those heavy change carts around. Where did they go?

HAd a great Prime Rib dinner at (SHOCK).... Copa at Sands. $ 9.99 pretty good deal and nicely smoky. Still not the deal that GK Steakhouse at the Sundowner. But close. Wait... it too was comped. So it's a MUCH BETTER deal.

By the way, when you swipe your card at Sands now, you will be asked "Do you want your free play now?" IF you punch "YES", it will also spit out your food comp coupons....and these expire in 30 days. SO be vewy, vewy careful about trying to use your free play if you cannot use the entire food comps in the current trip.

More later... and it's damn chilly outside tonight...11 pm Weds night

Sounds like I missed out on a good time last night. I got your message when I got home this morning. Ran into an ex GF at the market yesterday. Had to catch up on old times.

Quit whining about missing the 2-fer buffet at GSR. I have another one we can use Sunday through Thursday. I'll call you later today or you can call me on my cell (or is that IN my cell?).

One question, John.
Does she have a friend...I mean BESIDES YOU?

I ate at Copa last night...and I also do YELP reviews. I just finished my Copa review I copied and pasted here for you.

---------------------------------------------

This review is for the COPA Bar and Grill at the Sands.

I've been coming to Reno as a frequent tourist for a long time. And after years in the Army, I have issues with chow lines. Even with GOOD chow, a buffet may be a favorite for some, but I'm not one of them. Hence a nice sit down Prime Rib dinner is part of my Reno road trip ritual. And I've been doing my research.

Copa's Prime Rib special (not on the "Oct. 2014 printed Menu currently at $ 9.99) is now my # 1 Prime Rib recommendation (after sadly losing GK's Steakhouse at the Sundowner). I hope some Vice President doesn't turn the old Tony Roma's space yet another incarnation.

They do have a bar that you can dine at as a lot of sports fans prefer during televised sports events. But I prefer a table. And my table was smack in the middle of the room which gave me a unique perspective on the diners' experience around me.

My first jobs ever were in a restaurant starting as busboy, dishwasher, short order cook and occasional server. And Mr. Copa has a well oiled machine going here. This review does not cover the casino or their patrons outside.

My Server, Ashley, immediately introduced herself and picked up on my habit of joking around. Since she had at least 4 or 5 other tables, I was also able to see how she was able to multitask everyone from the Asian couple with no English to
me, who wanted to chat or the 4 ladies unable to make a decision. Ashley, it turns out has a striking resemblance to my college girlfriend. I fear she may have caught me watching her work a little too intently. She even caught my pause when she asked "horseradish grated or sauce?". Enough said.

The onion rings appetizer is called a "tower". I expected something like the Outback Bloomin Rings. While they were perfectly cooked (and NOT GREASY at all) they were served on a knitting needle punched thru an over sized CD... like table top horseshoe ringers. Normally fully priced at $ 6 for the portion size, During certain hours (4-6 pm?) all appetizers are half priced. They reminded me of ols school A & W Drive in Rings... it seems I'm having a "Back to the Future" experience. Still, they were tasty and a bargain at the happy hour price.

Now to the Prime Rib. Perfectly cooked medium rare, little waste, not too fatty, with a large Russet baker (NOT IN FOIL...a pet peeve). Even the baby carrots were tasty. Even I was unable to finish the cut.... perfect for a late night snack

The Prime Rib tasted slightly smokey as if they put the entire roast in a smoker for an hour or so. I am STEALING that idea.

In summary: Pleasant atmosphere, fast & efficient service that's easy on the eyes, perfectly prepared good sized Prime Rib (with BOTH horseradishes) at a reasonable price.

My NEW favorite Prime Rib ritual spot.

Now back to some video poker....which I guess is the reason why I'm really here.

Did I forget to mention the entire meal was comped? Thanks for an excellent dinner, Mr. Copa. Now, I plan on getting some of your money out of your machines.

8:30 am Friday morning:

So all year long I hear, " The board is so quiet....." blah, blah, blah.

Bu unless I hear a few replies, I'm NOT going to tell the story of Fernando, the Security Guard at Siri's, or Jolee the bar tendress...that shocked the hell out of me. And I do NOT shock easily.

Hint....I sat at the bar for an hour at Siri's before Jolee showed what that brass pole behind the bar was made for.

But you guys probably don't want to hear how Jolee joined the $ 2 bill club.

I just LOVE making bar bets with twenty something bartenders around town. And the dayshift bartender at Siri's was no exception. As I plop at the bar, I ask, "So where would I find the PRIMA DONNA?" He has no idea. But many years ago, THIS was the Prima Donna, Flamingo Hilton, Golden Phoenix an NOW SIRI'S.

And after shift change, the swing bartendress is NOT so easily fooled.

I thought I might have a "first to review"....no luck.

I think it's great someone unboarded the windows of this once hotspot....but where the hell did the escalators go?

Anyway, they have a good selection of craft beers (odd that would be rare on Virginia Street) and a full selection of slots. I might have stayed longer if they had a club card which I'm told is in the works.

So I have a long chat with the very friendly (and fascinating history) security guard, Fernado about old Reno before dropping a few twenties at the bar. I like to think I'm observant and alert. but I should have detected the brass floor to ceiling pole was there for a reason.

A the lovely bartendress, Jolee showed me what it's there for. I'm required to have her join the $ 2 bill club....Cherrie is not present, but she joined that club years ago as the day shift bartendress at the sky view bar at the Cal Neva.

So Siri's has a diner in the back at it's going to take a lot of late night business from the Little Nugget. Sandwiches, Chicken & Waffles (going to have to try that), and grill fare. And MUCH nicer than home of the (now) $8 Awful/Awful.

FIVE stars for re opening this, Jeff. Sorry I missed Cherrie...say hi.

I for one have been enjoying the updates. I was going to wait till the trip was over and the dust had settled before I commented. Yes, I would sure like to hear the --shocking-- details.

Congratulations on the 2K royal. We know about the good luck and the trouble is so does the tax man. It is now operation - Hang on to the money.

Hi JD,

Thanks for the updates and also the reviews - I just saw them on Yelp, so I thought I'd check in here to see if you'd begun posting the trip report yet! haha

Congrats on all the wins. Stay up!

Regarding the Treasures of the Eldorado kiosk game, I don't know if I just got lucky, if it was a mad amount of play level, or something else, but yes, I won tons more than a discounted room. That kiosk provided tons of free Brew Brothers beer (to a point where I never had to visit the beer store during my time in Reno!) in addition to multiple free Night Owl specials, Gregg's El Camino Burgers, Key Lime Pie/Banana Cream tarts at Millie's 24 (when it was Tivoli Gardens, of course), and other useful items like insulated lunch coolers, pad and pen sets, a couple of T-shirts, some decks of playing cards, and even a few of the ever popular slot bunjees. I've talked with several people who have never won squat on them - not even a discounted room - so I'm thinking the rewards might have something to do with which tier level you are at, in addition to your coin thru. Gotta admit though, I hope they keep me at Gold Plus for a good little while - I feel like an idiot having to throw away all these 3 free spa suite nights + $150 in free play offers each month!

Keep us informed with any updates, and wave hello to the Nevadans at the Cal Neva for me!

Damn...My long post from VC just disappeared.

Look for my red van in lower right corner here and watch the outhouse races:

Lots of music, food, and people.
