Even as I type there is a crane parked on Virginia Street hooking a cable to the big shamrock with the trademark "F" above Fitzgerald's marquee. Pretty soon the entire marquee will be removed to make way for a balcony that will be at the base of the world's largest climbing wall going up the front of the building. The project was on hold while the developer and city argued over who would own the land under the parking garage, but the city council recently agreed to sell it so the development is back on the front burner. Eventually they expect to have a non-gaming hotel with the climbing wall up the front of the building, several small eateries, lounges, balconies overlooking Virginia Street and the train trench plaza, a rock climbing and bouldering park on the second floor and a BMX park on the roof. Speculation is running rampant as to whether or not it will succeed, but the consensus is that anything is better than an empty and dark building. It is also widely agreed that the new name, "Comm Row," is one of the dumbest names anybody has come up with. The first phase is expected to open by late summer.

I got used to watching out for trains while stumbling along Virginia. Now it's gonna rain bicycles!? The Fitz should be a Casino!! It's even got a prime location.

Look at the bright side, Dave. Raining bicycles is much safer than hailing taxis.

Hailing taxis was indeed clever. John, do you now have a ghost writer?

Personally, I prefer "cascading coins" or "flowing paper" as in those nice tickets that don't flow out of the machines often enough.

Where is JD? He is MIA. I have really enjoyed his posts.

I have not had a Reno destination in at least 9 months -- only passed through a few times enroute elsewhere. The casinos are not really remembering me well with offers either.
Conversely, I have two nickles to rub together which I likely wouldn't have had I gone to Reno as often as I used to.

Interesting article. Thanks for the link.

While we're at it, here are some more recent CommRow photos from the downtownmakeover site ->

Most of downtownmakeover's focus is on neighborhood issues and not of much use for visitors. This weekend, though, there were some notes on new downtown restaurants, a bar and some stores that might be of interest. One restaurant (Sup) is open right now, but the others mentioned look to be weeks or months from opening.
