On my downtown walk today I noticed the particle board has been removed from the windows and doors of the former Golden Phoenix store front on Virginia Street. Just inside the windows was a line of lit-up slot machines that stretched from one side to the other. Right behind that was a floor to ceiling white partition that prevented you from seeing whatever was behind it. Going around back I saw that the old painted glass doors on the alley have been replaced by rather substantial looking wood doors without windows. There were no trucks, work crews or other unusual activity in the area.
About 6 months ago there was an application before the city council for a liquor license at this location. Is something in the works here? Or are they just brightening up the facade to make the block seem more attractive? Time will tell, I guess. |

Ooo.. I'd love to see the Golden Phoenix lit up - such a grand display of good neon.
I wrote on a post here earlier this summer that I snuck a peek past the paper on the Fitz and actually saw a whole bank of machines lit up and two people working on them - you know, machine doors open, et cetera... |
