Oh yes... we're heading to Reno next Tuesday.... we still have to figure out this "chain" thing for the tires to get over Donner's Pass, but by God, we're coming.
Plans include gambling, eating at Santa Fe Hotel (has anyone on here eaten there?? It intrigued the hell out of me when I saw it and now that I heard they have Basque food, we're going!), drinking, gambling, playing poker, eating at Pho 777, gambling, drinking while playing poker, eating at Peg's Glorified, gambling, drinking while playing slots, gambling, and visiting the infamous Shooter's for the first time. Also, we might go stay at Harvey's one night.
YAY!!!! |

Oh, that sounds like a dream come to life!
Kudos for braving the crummy conditions - I had to do the "chains" thing once, and it wasn't too bad - I'd advise buying them before you set out, as prices tend to shoot upward in direct proportion to the proximity of the actual snowfall. You just buy the ones that match your tire size, which you can find imprinted on the tire; for example, I have fourteen-inch wheels (among the smallest), so I got the 14"-type tire chains. Putting them on is straightforward enough; lay them out straight, then drive onto them, then tie 'em up. (It's been awhile, but I believe that's more or less it.)
My guess is that there's a much bigger problem when the snowfall gets so heavy that Caltrans simply closes I-80 altogether, but the odds are most likely in your favor that this shan't come to pass.
I had to vote "What's Harveys?", since I know distantly of it, but have *still* never set foot Tahoe South Shore land.
I highly commend your use of the "Poll" - I'm glad someone else is putting it to productive use, rather than the incredibly mindless ones I've put up in the past!
Have a great time! And post one of your ever-so-detailed reports upon your return! |

I think I'd limit my driving this time of year...but that's just me.
Santa Fe is close (kinda right behind Harrah's) but Louis' Basque Corner has a better reputation.
Not being allowed to wear a beret, I've eaten at both but had more fun at Louis'.
In either joint, order the Picon Punch as soon as you walk in. |

Well we are heading the Reno way very shortly. Not sure how many in the New Years Eve Mob this year but we think it is about 20 Straight Years in Reno for New Years Eve. Still having some trouble finding something outstanding, Show, or Dinner Dance to attend, but we will figure out something. Let's see Craps, VP, Craps, VP, Blackjack, VP, Craps. Not sure of the order and of course how long the money will last. As I am no longer allowed to drink (Dr. Orders) I usually name a designated Drinker to take my spot as Lead Drinker.
Try the Western Village Steak House for diner and maybe they still have $1 Craps.
Look out Peppermill, here we come! |

Of all people, I have to give you a word of caution about Shooter's. Not Shooter's itself but the dregs you might find just outside the place. My pals and I have always gotten a kick out of slumming over there and it can be quite entertaining but....One of my friends was recently in Reno and wandered over there in the wee hours of the morning. After more than a few drinks he started back for the Legacy. He encountered these dregs just outside and (I'm not supposed to go into details) they were none too friendly. (He's OK)
Just thought I'd give you a cautionary note. I hate to steer anybody into harm's way. |

Oh, Dave, we didn't do any damage to your friend. We just took all his money and those fine shoes he was wearing. And please stop referring to us as "dregs". |

Alright Lily- You go girl. You know that putting on tire chains gives you good Karma in the casino. Have a great trip, and you are carrying heat for your trip to Shooters, right?
I happen to like Harvey's and Lake Tahoe, but the weather will dictate if you make the trip.
I voted #2 on your poll. I am not newly wed...... so I guess that means I am nearly dead. Probably true. |

As Uncle Junior said to Tony Soprano in one of the first episodes of The Sopranos... "You come in heavy, or don't come in at all". |

Well, as you may know The Dog is in the Air Force and we just received this from Beale AFB -
A series of significant winter storms are poised to strike Beale AFB and
Northern California. The first system will begin Friday night and run
through Sunday. The second storm will impact the area Sunday night through Tuesday. High winds and heavy rain will be the norm. Beale and the surrounding valley will receive an average of 3 inches of rain through the duration of these systems. Winds will peak at 45KTS with average speeds in the 30s. Localized flooding can be expected in low lying areas. Downed trees and power lines are common with this type of system. Make preparations for the potential of power loss. Secure all loose items around your home and travel only if necessary.
Travel to the mountains is highly discouraged, as winds near the passes will reach 70kts or higher. Visibility will be near zero, with snow and blowing snow. Several feet of snow is expected this weekend. Travel conditions will be near impossible and should not be attempted.
Nonetheless, we may just have to adjust our travel plans by one day or so.... I NEED a Reno adventure....
And yes, CaSwede, we are heat-ready.... in fact, if conditions warrant, we may just take Amtrak as they now allow you to pack heat! |

with that weather forecast, I promise that John and I will not venture further than 10 feet from Shooters door. We can still accost Dave's friends within 10 feet. John, when do I get to wear the shoes? |

My turn wearing the shoes is finished on Friday. Then Higgins gets them for a week, then they're all yours |

If I had shoes, I'd come to Reno.
Maybe Hawk will pass them on to me next, then I will pass them on to BCD. Every board member should get a chance.
But, John, the brass pole floor to ceiling that moved from Shooters to your place can stay where it is. No need to share that with the board. |
