New member here. My name is Jeff. I will be in Reno for Super Bowl weekend this year.
I am from Ohio. I lived in California for 13 years from 1990-2003 and have been to Reno SEVERAL times
My first trip to Reno was in 1990.
We used to go to Reno or Tahoe about once a month.
Our game(s) of choice are video poker, craps and betting horses.
When it comes to Casino/Hotel decisions I am pretty loyal to maximize the comps.
We have moved several times over the past due to comp policy changes etc.
We started at Harrahs and I didnt think their comps were very good.
We then moved to Flamingo and REALLY LIKED that place but unfortunately they were sold. The Golden Phoenix was a crap hole imo.
We then moved to Silver Legacy and it was GREAT at first but then they did some "tweaking" to the comp policy (not in our favor) so we moved.
Looking for a new place I went to Circus Circus and asked to speak to the Race Book manager (I can't remember his name but I last saw him 2 years ago). He actually took the time to sit down and talk to me which I thought was a pretty cool thing to do. I told him what I normally bet a day. After that conversation, I always got comped rooms and comped meals. We got VIP tickets for their Super Bowl party which was always a good time. I have stayed there ever since.
A few things I remember about Reno back in the day;
When you had to walk outside to get from Circus Circus to Eldorado
When Harrahs showroom was where the Race/Sportsbook is now and it was a 2 drink minmum
When the Flamingo Hilton was still open (used to be our hotel of choice)
When there was a casino (including table games) in the Circus Circus Sky Tower
When the Grand Sierra was the Hilton and before that Ballys
I am sure there will be some other things that come to mind. I enjoy reading the trip reports and will be posting one of my own after our trip. |

Welcome to the board Jeff. Have you thought about staying at the Eldorado? They have their players card set up so you can scan your card, and see your available comp balance. |

We actually stayed there one time (I hit my first Royal Flush there!). We were turned off by the Front Desk girl who tried to get us to upgrade rooms. When we asked her what was different, she said "The room is better and closer to the elevator" LOL |

Dave, that new slogan for the board is perfect. John, I insist that it be integrated into the site somehow.
Jeff, consider signing up for the old farts club here at the board - the point system for the comps is also vague and mysterious, but the benefits are great - for example, you get a posting space that's nicer, and it's closer to the javascript compiler.
Anyway, enjoy - I was a fan of the Flamingo back in the day, so I also lament the loss. The town is definitely a tad more bleak these days, but it's still a fun place. Make sure to post a trip report; we feed off that stuff. |

stan,
My last visit to Reno was November of 2009. It was kind of depressing to see the changes in the 5 years I had been there.
I still had a GREAT TIME with some friends who drove in from California. It was more of a watch football all weekend and have a few drinks (my liver and kidneys are just now getting back to normal, LOL).
I am sure this upcoming trip will be good! |

I'll be in Reno for Super Bowl weekend also. We haven't been to Reno in 8 years so we are looking to see what has changed. |

On my drive up to Reno on I-80 at the off ramp to Thunder Valley Casino the casino had a big billboard along the road--- Reno-The longest short drive in the world.
They also had the same sign between Reno and the California state line. |
