YAY! 10 days until my arrival in Reno! Haven't been there since late February/early March. Well, I guess technically it's only 6 days until I arrive in Reno on Sunday but will be heading to California for 4 days prior to staying in Reno (yes, it will be hard to drive past Silver Legacy on my way to California - ha ha). Going to stay in Susanville, CA for 1 night. Then on to a cabin rental near Lassen Volcanic National Park for 3 nights to enjoy some much needed quiet time in the mountains and hiking. Lassen has been on my list of places to see for quite some time. One of the lesser traveled national parks, no large crowds to contend with, is right up my alley. Then back to Reno at Silver Legacy for 5 nights (yes, I know there will be large crowds to contend with there for the balloon festival).
So excited for this trip! It will combine 2 passions of mine - the peacefulness and quiet of being in the mountains and bustling casinos (a stark contrast, I know)! Life is good!

That's odd, Seattle.
I drive thru Susanville on my way to Reno... well, if it's fair weather and not on a holiday weekend with Winnebagos pulling boats.
From Klamath Falls (Be sure to buy gas in K Falls -$ .40/gal than CA)
139 South to 299 to near Canby
RIGHT at 139/299 & follow signs: Adin, Eagle Lake, Susanville
169 miles
------------------
You CAN turn LEFT and go to Reno via Alturas, Standish, Litchfield, THEN LEFT to Reno OR RIGHT to Susanville. It's 17 miles further but flat, straight and faster...sometimes. Then you would have to backtrack to get to Susanville.
And you could stay on I - 5 to McCloud or a couple of other places...but not recommended.
I'd recommend trying various choices on google maps. |

Sorry JD, I should have been more clear in my original post. Flying from Seattle to Reno. Then renting a car at Reno airport and driving to California. It's apparently only about a 90 minute drive (2 hours tops) from Reno to Susanville.
From my research, Lassen is roughly half way between flying from Seattle to Sacramento vs. from Seattle to Reno. So of course I will choose Reno. Every. Single. Time. |

I shoulda guessed that.
In the fortress of solitude portion of your trip, try to score a book on Peter Lassen. A true version of Ben Cartwright. Trail blazed the Cut off of the California Trail, HUGE Mexican Land grant ranch, and killed very near Burning Man in the Black Rock Canyon. By Pah Utes? Or was it a fellow rancher?
CSI Honey Lake
I'll have to check my library for the exact title. Fascinating man. Fascinating story... shoulda been a movie about him and Lansford Hastings... another "trail blazer" of "short Cuts"
And on the drinking and gambling portion... write us a heads up on SL. I'm right behind you. Arriving 25 Sept
Are you going to Rancho San Rafael Park for the lift off? |

Seahawk: Try to find "Lassen, His Life & legacy" by Ruby Johnson Swartzlow
90 page booklet w/ hand drawn maps (pg 46-47)
Illustrations of Bosquejo (the real Ponderosa?) then and now.
Merge the story of Henry Van Sickle (Genoa) and Peter Lassen and you could call yourself David Dortort and write a series of screenplays that would last 12 years on TV.

JD - Thanks for all of the info!
And yes, I am going to be at Rancho San Rafael for the lift off! Apparently I am getting comped tickets to sit in the Silver Legacy VIP tent. I have no idea what that experience includes but am looking forward to finding out! All I know so far is that I will be on a shuttle that leaves SL at 4:00 a.m. The night before might possibly be one of those nights where I don't go to bed at all if I already have to be up in the middle of the night anyway. It is Reno afterall. Sleep!?! Who needs it! |

Say hi to Robert and/or Larry... bartenders ( USUALLY at Silver Baron Bar but rotate around). Tell them JD says they pour a good beer. Pause for reaction then slip them a deuce. They might not remember JD but they both should remember the $ 2 bill guy...especially Robert.
My favorite line is, "Mr. Carano told me to try his recent prize winning Cab. Do you know what he was talking about?" ($ 8 -$ 12 a glass in restaurant)
Relax in your camp mode. Then go nuts on the Reno part. Full details required in your trip report. (Does Horizon have an Orange & Black OSU plane?) |
