In contrast to the depressing news about Harrah's, here's a ray of sunshine for downtown Reno. The Sands is getting a make-over, They're upgrading the buffet, casino and rooms. More eateries are planned too. This story came out about a year ago, but I don't think it got much attention here. So, I'm resurrecting it for those who didn't hear about it and to offer some good Reno news. https://www.ktvn.com/story/40570474/sands-regency-unveils-new-buffet-as-part-of-50-million-in-renovations

As soon as the Sands gets a makeover of their CUSTOMERS, I'm in.

It's the biggest fault I find at the Sands.

I've never had a problem with the rooms (except the minor beef that they must have installed the super slow elevator from the old Onslow/ Cal Neva) .

That will happen if/when they raise their rates, I guess. I'm thinking about staying there next trip. I like the way it looks at night.

Downtown during an event seems to be getting expensive.

Hi Everyone!!

Well im glad to see they are investing some money on this place. I have only been there once in all my years going to Reno. The room was basic but at $19 a steal. For fun i looked up rates on their site, and they show $25 for tonight.. Still dirt cheap.. How is that possible? lol.. It was prob 15 years ago when i stayed there last.

I miss Reno!! Dawn and i are finally trying to get back this October we hope.. I may just do a solo trip for a few days in the next few months.. Its been way too long and i am seriously jonesing..

Nice to hear from you Alison! Hope you are able to pull off that Reno getaway before too long. I used to stay at the Sands a lot. (80's and 90's) The rooms were always big, bright and colorful. I saw a room at the Sands once listed at $8.50 a night. Needless to say, that was a long time ago. I don't know how they are able to offer those rates either, but they do seem to know how to keep their hotel full - which helps keep the casino hopping!

IF you have a car and are looking for a deal, try the Sparks Nugget or Grand Sierra.

My avatar will go down in history!! Lol!!

I may try to get down in May/june for a few days.. Might head down and have my bf and his kids meet me after i have had at least a full day to myself. Really hard to gamble when you have kids and you feel like you are ditching them for the casino.. but i havent been so long that i need to get some gambling time in too. My host said she would always hook me up with rooms, but i still feel a bit guilty not playing much.

I use to go to sparks quite a bit. GSR till they stopped having their LIR Tournament. Then the Nugget last time I was there when they had the gun fight at the O K corral, Tnen Harrahs till they quit having the Keno Tourns.
Guess I'd be classified as a Fair Weather Friend?

I just got back from 3 days in downtown Reno. I spent a fair amount of time at the Sands, although I stayed at El Dorado.
The casino and walkways have been painted, with new decorations. The Buffet area is very nice and turned out well. It is smaller than other buffets, but very clean and new. It looks great and much bigger than before.
The exterior of the property is newly painted, and has nice ornamental statues that are lit up at night and looks nice. The new owners are investing a lot of money in the property. The convention area was blocked off during my visit.
However, the usual limitations of this property remain. Low ceilings. Both casino bar areas are still dated, smokey. The 3rd street bar area has been improved. There was not a lot of traffic the weekend I was there, the weekend before super bowl. the gaming machines looked newer, and the felt on the tables was new, and looked like the table were bigger than I remember.
I think with the Harrahs sale and conversion to a non-gaming property, the sands has room to improve. I hope so; I like the Row properties; but I also like to roam and walk around. Losing Harrahs limits those options. Cal Neva was very quiet on my visit. Not a lot of traffic. In 5 years, it will be interesting how downtown casinos shake out. I do like what has happened at the row properties; but I also want a value option downtown.
Also mentioned by several dealers at Sands, that Gold Dust is also betting a lot of investment and will offer live gaming in March I believe. I have never been there, but seems like an easy walk from the downtown properties I stay at.

Thanks for the update OC. Did you get any pics of the newly painted Sands? I really disliked their old brown and beige exterior color scheme. I did a brief search online but didn't fine any pics of the 'new' Sands.

I did not take any pictures. But the beige/brown scheme is gone. The new colors are a dark brown, and I can't remember the second color. mayber gray. But it looks very nice, and yes a huge improvement over that beige.
