Came to Reno to dispose of a body. Actually our dear friend asked us to come along while she scattered her sisters remains at Lake Tahoe. Sis had been a dealer at Harrah’s Tahoe for 19 years and her final wishes were to go home. So after taking care of that task we spent a couple nights in Reno at Silver Legacy. I now live in Las Vegas but in the 90s lived in Oregon and Reno was our gambling destination. I had not been since 2013. That trip was heartbreaking for me. Reno had deteriorated so badly compared to the “good old days”. I was not prepared for what I saw this trip
My goodness.....If Reno were a pet I would say it was suffering and needs to be put to sleep. All 5 of the remaining casinos are just sad shells of their former glory. And while Covid does not help it is not the whole problem. I have so many drunken fun memories at each casino that it was depressing to see them now. I took our friend on the old loop walking tour and narrated “this is where the Comstock used to be, over there was The Sundowner”. It truly mad me sad. The shuttered Harrahs, Nugget and Circus with no table games. I doubt I will ever return. I will just try to remember it as it once was. The Fitz, Harold’s Club and all the others will have to just be a memory of great times.
We played slots and everybody lost. One member of our party hit a $450 win on Buffalo Gold. But the next biggest win was under $40.
Drove out to Virginia City and had a good lunch. Checked out Grand Sierra and Peppermill. The non downtown casinos seem to be doing fine and I guess that is the place to be today in Reno as far as gambling goes. But downtown is where my heart always has been. And it is kind of broken seeing the state of things today....

I have to agree. My heart aches for the non stop, crowded fun of Reno in the 80's and early '90's. It was a pretty sad downtown when I was there last October. Since then Harrah's and the little Nugget have closed too! (And Harrah's announced it's pending closure late last year before Covid was a thing!). It's a freakin' disaster.
