My wife and I decided to stay in Reno on Saturday night after driving up to Placer County from the Bay Area. Because of the 25,000 people who came to the Safari Club convention, the only place where we could get a room for free was the Sands. (Harrahs' rooms were $299 with my platinum card, and Siena's were going for $99.) The Sands' casino was somewhat full, but not too busy: I was able to get onto the craps table, no problem. I lost some money at poker before dinner, but made about $700 at the craps table after dinner.

Then we headed to the Siena. With the convention in town, there were a few more people there than usual (I heard a dealer comment on this), but it certainly was not crowded at all, and some of the people who were there were a bit on the obnoxious side, as one guy thought that he had to throw the dice eight feet in the air in order to impress the two women standing next to him. The dealers seemed a bit on the bored side, one might even say indifferent and cold. I lost my craps winnings there, and my wife lost too, so I guess we did our part to keep that place open; I did get $60 on a nickel poker machine and the 4-of-a-kind bonus promotion that they have there was nice, as I hit 5 of them in a very short amount of time.

The next morning, we played at Harrahs and at Cal Neva. Made some money back at the craps table and had a great time playing blackjack. Dealers at the Cal Neva are fun, for the most part. Having the fat tire draft served in a plastic cup at the craps table helps one have fun, as well.

Decided at this point that we wanted to stay another night, so we got a free room at Harrah's. Won some money at craps and then had dinner at Ichiban. Had the all-you-eat-sushi; service was spotty and watch out for the roll with the jalapeno peppers! Furthermore, they got rid of their baby lobster roll, so I now must say that the Atlantis sushi bar is superior. (Has anyone tried the Circus Circus sushi bar? How does it measure up?) After dinner, the craps table heated up. One guy rolled for over half an hour, hitting his fire bet (four different points) which pays 25:1. Later, my wife rolled for over 20 points, hitting her number at least 6-7 times and also hitting a fire bet of four different points. Left the table with a $1300 profit.

It was a Sunday night, so it was not too crowded. Two craps tables, $10 each. $10 blackjack, as well.

Played a bit more in the morning at Harrah's and Cal Neva and gave a bit back, but with $1000+ in winnings, this perennial loser can't complain, even if I didn't win the $7 million Wheel of Fortune progressive, as someone did at the Grand Sierra Resort on Saturday night after putting in only $100.

This was a good month, as we went to Reno twice and we won twice. (Enjoyed the lobster buffet at Harrah's two weeks ago.) Probably will make a trip to that inferior place in Southern Nevada next month.

Thanks for the report; sounds like you had a great time.
It's always good to hear of winnings, especially when they aren't given back later on!
I'm also a big fan of Cal-Neva, and really hope they can hang on, while so many other downtown places have bitten the dust.

p.s. - the best I can do with rearranging the letters in "Cal-Neva" is "Can Veal"

I am not sure what the Safari Club is. Does this have to do with hunting? Sounds like a nice trip, and it was nice you had the flexibility to spend an extra night. "watch out for the roll with the jalapeno peppers! " You are supposed to dip them in Wasabi to cool it down. Very Happy Have you tried the Sushi bar at the Peppermill? If so, how does it compare?

Safari Club International is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving wildlife. "Why would they want to do this?", you ask. So they can hunt 'em down and kill 'em. I must admit, though, their convention is beautiful. They spare no expense. You can visit their website at http://www.safariclub.org/

Reno has been SCI's host for at least 10 years, and I think they're committed to us until 2010 or so. They bring loads of money into town, most of which goes to the casinos. It's fun to go to the show and watch crusty old men holding hands with beautiful young women who are dripping in jewelery. It's obvious love is the binding factor here.

So let me get this straight.

You pay your $ 1,000 membership fee and you get they throw in the young blonde with the jewlery? Or is that extra?

And just exatly WHAT do they hunt?

Types of Life Memberships:

Regular Life Membership USA, Canada, Mexico $1,000; All other countries $1,500

I think I'll just buy a SFI logo baseball hat and see what I can cut out of the herd next year. (Can these guys really shoot straight?)

I'm not sure if I'd want to join a club that would have me for a member

Well, JD...the $1,000 membership is for a lifetime. You can join for a mere $55. Nacherly, the babe doesn't come with either membership, but I've heard you can rent one at showsite. I think they're on the street corners outside, BYOJ.

And since they go on safaris, they hunt lions, tigers, cougars, cows, etc. and, with one bullet, transform them into "trophies". As long as they don't start hunting cockatoos, I'm OK with it.

Yes, the wasabi definitely would have cooled it down....even a mouthful of it. Maybe the sushi chef noticed that we were getting impatient after getting only two orders after 35 minutes of waiting and was looking for vengeance.

I've never tried the sushi bar at the Peppermill. In fact, I've never gambled there, but maybe we'll have to give it a try!
