Well, the countdown has hit the lower 40's and I'm starting to get the bug. I thought I should maybe watch a few Reno-themed movies to really get psyched for the trip.

I have Waking Up in Reno and, of course, Sister Act. Are there any other movies you folks can recommend to help me pass the next month and 10 days?

Thanks,

llk

I think you can rent DVDs of the "Reno 911" show, though I've never seen it, and have no idea whether it was even done on location.

If you see the William Macy/Alec Baldwin vehicle, "The Cooler", you'll recognize the roof of the El Dorado, even though the script is telling you that the characters are in Vegas.

I liked "The Cooler" because Alec Baldwin did a fantastic job in it, and it was filmed in the old "Golden Phoenix" that was closed at that time. The story somewhat reminds me of what the casino business used to be, and how corporations have changed it all, sometimes not for the better.

Another good one with Peppermill is "Hard Eight" which is another good movie.

Reno 911 was actually filmed in Reno.

Another good movie is "Gia". It has nothing to do with Reno, but Angelina Jolie gets naked a lot in it.

Pink Cadillac, a Clint Eastwood and Bernadette Peters film has some nice scenes of 80's Reno. They even "crash" the Eldorado. And for some real old time Reno, California Split with Elliot Gould and George Segal was shot largely in the Mapes! I haven't seen this gambling buddies film but it had lots of good reviews.

Or...yeah, for a real sense of Reno, stick on a porno flick, guzzle a dozen beers and throw a couple of hundred bucks out the window.

I think I remember Pink Cadillac. I'll check the local video store and see if they have it.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Kingpin

"I hear they have the best number 58 in town"

"but your number 56 sure looks good too"

"and don't forget about the 28 topping potato bar, largest in the state"

Just found this funny video on Youtube. Shot in Reno in 1984? Besides the comedy there's some good shots of a more vibrant downtown. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtG-vFgvf-s Could this be the worlds oldest music video?

Now that's some primo footage.

I sure would have liked to see this town when throngs packed the sidewalks and there were twice as many casinos.

Ah, well, I guess I can rent all the movies described in this thread - this sure would be a goot time to get one of them Netflix thingys.

I saw California Split recently. It's alright, but really dated, and very 70s. Plus it's hard to root for the main characters, they're simply not very likable.

My favorite Reno film is Hard Eight. Here's how Netflix describes it:
"Boogie Nights director Paul Thomas Anderson's first film charts the relationship between world-weary card shark Sydney (Phillip Baker Hall) and reckless youth John (John C. Reilly). After showing him how to exploit casinos' perks, Sydney takes John under his wing. Years later, the surrogate father and son are successful gamblers -- until John falls for a hooker (Gwyneth Paltrow) and gets mixed up with a shady stranger (Samuel L. Jackson)."

You'll recognize scenes all over Reno, from Trader Dick's at the Nugget and a crummy hotel downtown to an old coffee shop near I-80.

Shooty Bob sez check it out.

"Breaking Vegas: Black Jack Man" is a movie about Ken Uston (the card counter) which clearly filmed some of the scenes from "Las Vegas" hotel rooms in the Peppermill. Where else can you find rooms which look like they're stuck in the 70's? I bet the Pepp didn't know about it either! Would they consent to a film about a card counter being filmed in their casino? I highly doubt it!
