The new owner, who owns the little dump Alamo, has installed Alamo rules at Fitzgeralds. All single decks dealt deeply, double any first two cards, LATE SURRENDER, and any six-card unbusted player hand is an automatic winner. One table has been increased to $1000 max; the others remain at $500.

Nice, positive changes. Even if you don't play blackjack, when you visit Fitzgeralds, please comment to a boss about how nice the changes are. Good to see a casino actually trying to attract new business with game improvement, instead of the other way around.

It remains to be seen how tolerant the new ownership will be of brain-using patrons. Alamo is a notorious sweatshop despite its tiny table max of only $100.

Good to know! Are they also keeping the availability of the two-dollar-minimum table? Not that it ever has any open seats, but it was nice to see them make the effort.

They should serve Trader Joe's' two-buck Chuck wine at this table, now that I think about it. Or is two-buck Chuck a California-only thing?

No. In a circular handed out this weekend management said that because of the more liberal rules they could not afford to continue offering the lower limits. They didn't say what the new limits will be but there were plenty of $5 tables so I'm guessing that is it.

They also said that the new rules will require a higher number of hands dealt per hour so they are going to be switching to shuffling machines - still one deck at a time, not continuous shuffling, fortunately.

They will also have two poker tables on the first floor and will begin dealing poker as soon as they have enough trained dealers.

Phooey.

I wish some establishments would take note of how Cal-Neva always seems to have three-dollar tables - even on the weekends! Okay, I can't verify if that's *all* weekend, or just part of it, but when the Mrs. and I took a trip there last summer, they had three-dollar tables early Sunday afternoon.

There's just something about the psychological threshold of a five-dollar blackjack bet that turns me off, and while the two-dollar table at the Fitz was always packed, I always checked it out.

The five-dollar minimum at all the "Establishment" places (meaning the Eldo-Leg-Circus triumvirate), plus the stoooopid "Super Single Deck" means I won't touch their tables.

Sure, I'm a cheapskate, but I'm a loyal cheapskate!

I'll be anxious to check out the Fitz next time I am there. Goofy question for you guys but what in the world is LATE SURRENDER?

Heck, with blackjack rules that that, they could have $10 or $15 tables and have them packed all the time. Take a look at Thunder mountain near Sacramento. They have high limits (mostly $25) and you have problems finding a seat.

Fitzgerald's has taken an approach that I hope pays off. I will hope to clean them out the next time I am there, but I hope they make money and get the action back in Reno.

Now, get a single zero roulette, a 10x or more craps table and I think that table players will flock to the place. I would not even complain about the slow elevators if they did that....

When the dealer has an ace up, the player has the option of forfeiting half his bet rather than playing against the ace. If you can do this before the dealer checks the hole card for a blackjack, it's early surrender. If you have to wait until after the hole card is checked (losing the entire bet if the blackjack is there) that is late surrender.

I have not made a personal appearance there since the changeover, but friends have reported that constant shuffling is now the norm, making the game essentially worthless for brain-using patrons. Too bad. The new management has already shot itself in the foot by wasting so much time and reducing the hands per hour, therefore reducing the casino's potential profit against the average patron.

I really wish I'd thought of that sooner...I could have gone there, gotten a seat at the table (no small task, it was always packed), and then asked the cocktail waitress if they had two-buck chuck on hand for the two-buck table.

They probably wouldn't even have it, but it would have been so satisfying if they did.

As a matter of fact, my frig now contains an open bottle of Two buck Chuck Merlot. should be gone today tho and it's my last. I don't go to CA much where they sell this stuff. In fact, I have never seen it in a store.

guess I'm not much of an oenophile cause I put all my wine in the frig.
Seems like when I have Merlot at bar in reno, it is always chilled.
whatever, it tastes good to me.
If you learn more, let me know. Perhaps I'll adjust.

It turns out that the shuffle point appears to be dealer-dependent. There are some intelligent dealers who deal deeply, benefiting the house, themselves, and the brain-using patron, and some slugs who shuffle constantly, hurting the house, themselves, and the brain-using patron. I hope eventually management will get rid of the shuffling slugs.
