RGJ is reporting that Cal Neva's sports book will be the first in the state to offer a new kind of interactive betting that allows bettors to make fifty different kinds of bets while a game is being watched. I think these are propositions like will the next play result in a first down, will it be a pass or a run, etc.

I seem to recall this was tried in Las Vegas about 10 years ago and didn't last. I also seem to recall that the betting was pari-mutuel, that is, the total amount bet by the losers on a given proposition was divided up and paid in proportionate shares to the winners, less the house vig, of course. That way, the house always made a profit and they didn't have to set odds or a line on each play. Maybe it didn't attract enough players to make a profitable betting pool.

Anyway, here's the article:

Sadly, I still recall the great hot dog and Heinie for a buck fifty.
Now a limp, disgusting (so=called) hot dog and lame draft American (so called ) brew for two bucks fifty. Who, in his right mind would venture into such a disgusting pit?

This settles it. I am calling Alison's Castle right now and booking the Tuscan Suites and taking my hundred bucks free play......

Give me a break,... I don't make it up, I just report it. The article said the first in the state.

Actually, I did a quick google search and found several other articles on the subject. It seems the system was first tested at the Palms in Las Vegas in 2006, and was dropped in short order. In typical Nevada fashion, the sports book manager at the Palms who put in the system is now the promoter who is quoted in the RGJ article about the Cal Neva. In other words, can we say "vested interest"? Some of the articles I found mentioned a similar system tested in the mid-90"s, which is the one I remembered. That one failed, too, but the new developers say theirs is NEW AND IMPROVED so it must be better or they wouldn't say so. Right?

Now, now - we all know that the Club Cal-Neva is first in many arenas - Rank odor, for example, from the bizarre carpet cleaner or whatever it is they use - but on the bright side, best table minimums - where else but Carson City can you count on seeing three-dollar minimums with decent rules?

To get better blackjack, you'd probably have to go to some super-depressing "Locals"-oriented grind joint, where the lower minimums would be "balanced" out by the even-more-surly personnel, seedy atmosphere, and atrocious refreshments.

Club Cal-Neva is also first in architectural street-extension confusion, now that the Flamingo/Phoenix is safely buried - where else can you go up escalators, through a sportsbook and past extra blackjack tables, then go down another escalator, and be in a different building that's yet the same casino?

Club Cal-Neva is first in having a bank of slots that have some sort of "Train" theme.

Jerry, was that limp and disgusting hot dog with its accompanying lame American draft *really* that different back when it was a buck-fifty? Or is it possible that as youngsters, such a deal tasted great to us, as we were young, newly inebriated, and exultant in the glow of wonder that Reno and places like the Cal-Neva cast upon us?

In sum, Club Cal-Neva is a king among men. And if they're saying the new scam - sorry, betting system - is "New & Improved", who am I not to gaze upon it with bemusement, as I sip a weak seven-and-seven?

And I, along with Hawk, also love this board. Where else do highbrow and lowbrow meet and get along so splendiferously?

Hey, if we're going to be nostalgic about the place, how about the long gone Hofbrau? Genuine big slabs a meat sliced with taters or sauerkraut. AND the always available 99 cent bacon and egg breakfast. Now what is it? a mostly closed Mexican restaurant?

I find myself going there more and more, why? I win there. Plain and simple. If they clean the joint up (read: air it out; shampoo the carpets; and carry out a couple passed out drunks) the limits would go up, the odds down and we'd pass it up, I guess.

They also sent me a flier for all free weekends in April including give-a-ways, I just can't bring myself to stay there though....

I just came back from Reno, and spent some time watching basketball in the Cal Neva sports book. They took the right side of the sports book, The area near the snack bar, and set up some tables with computer screen. The have about 12 stations. Thursday morning they had an information table set up instructing people on how it works. There was a sign stating there was a $100 minimum buy in, to use them. There was only 3 or 4 people using them, and the minimum soon dropped to $50, and still very little action. I don't think the Cal Neva clientele was very interested. I doubt it will last past the weekend.

I never thought I'd be defending Cal-Neva, but from the standpoint of the serious bettor, Cal-Neva is the best-run sportsbook in northern Nevada. Sure, the main store is old and dirty, but there are many satellite locations throughout Reno and elsewhere.

Under the new management, they don't sweat the action nearly as much as they used to, and will take increased limits. During March Madness, bets of $3300 on half-times were routinely accepted. The maximums on totals appear to have been increased, too. The new management does not move the lines as quickly. It used to be that a single max bet would move the line a half-point; that's not always the case now, which is a credit to the new management and a very player-friendly change.

Your anonymity is assured, because you can move around, placing bets at different locations. Cashing tickets is easy, because it can be done at any Cal-Neva location without hassles. You don't have to return to the location where you made the bet. This is true for any amount of ticket, unlike Leroy's which will cash only small tickets (under $1000 bet) at other locations.

So, while I despise the casino itself, the Cal-Neva sportsbook is excellent.

When did it change that you could cash in a winning ticket at any Cal-Neva location? I know as of last football season you had to take the ticket back to the location you made the bet. That is the one thing I didn't like about the Cal-Neva sportsbooks.

Several months ago. To my knowledge, Cal-Neva and Harrah's properties are the only sportsbooks with interchangeable ticket-cashing, except for Leroy's, which as previously noted, will cash only very small tickets at locations other than where the bet was made.
