We open our season by celebrating the wealth of musical talent
here at home, in America and right here in Nevada. This concert
launches an ongoing collaboration with the Nevada Museum of Art’s
“Art +Environment” and features two of Reno’s
finest talents—one a violinist and the other a composer. The
concert begins with Ruth Lenz, the RPO’s recently appointed
concertmaster, performing the virtuosic and lyrical violin concerto
of Erich Korngold, a composer recruited by Hollywood for classic
1930s scores such as The Adventures of Robin Hood because of his
Romantic Austro-Hungarian pedigree.
Reno born-and-raised composer Sean Shepherd will present a second
world premiere with his hometown ensemble. Sean grew up listening
to the Reno Philharmonic and playing in the RPO Youth Orchestras.
He has since become a composer of international repute, and we are
thrilled to sponsor and perform a second composition following in
the wake of February’s world premiere of “Silvery Rills.”
We close the concert with one of the most beloved symphonies of
all time, Antonin Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9, From the
New World. Dvorak was brought to America to encourage young American
composers to find a distinctive style of composition, an American
musical voice. In his New World Symphony, Dvorak sought to capture
the vibrancy of life in his ‘new world’ quoting Native
American song and African American spirituals as a sonic guide to
the wonders of musical culture in the United States.
“[Ms. Lenz] has a lovely sound and an assured technique and
the heart-on-the-sleeve sensitivity of a vibrant young woman…”
Jack Neal January 2005, Ms. Lenz’s debut solo performance.

Whether at its most abstract or most pictorial, symphonic music
often tells the story of triumph over adversity. This concert features
three works that represent this basic theme whether musically or
in the lives of their composers. Most famously, Ludwig van Beethoven
overcame deafness to create the best-known symphony in classical
music. Its opening four notes serve as an emblem for the composer’s
determination. Initially a failure in America, Prokofiev took refuge
in post WWI Paris to avoid returning to Russia a failure, when the
opportunity arose to premiere both an opera and piano concerto in
Chicago. His third concerto would become his most popular and be
known among the composer’s greatest musical triumphs. Wagner’s
opera The Flying Dutchman (1843) was inspired in part by his own
stormy sea crossing from Riga to London, during a time of financial
ruin for the composer. Written in Paris, the opera would premiere
in 1843 and help restore the composer’s career. In the overture,
written after the entire opera had been completed, Wagner works
with Leitmotif, short musical ideas or melodies symbolic of characters
or ideas in the drama. This technique would come to define his later
artistic triumphs.
Trained at Juilliard, Damon Meng won first place in national and
international competitions, performed with orchestras in Canada,
Mexico and China and is the only pianist accepted into the joint
program at Harvard University and the New England Conservatory.

wunderkind.” New York Times

Great composers know that expressive power lies not in following
but in breaking the rules. This concert features works that still
surprise listeners, in the case of Berlioz’s inimitable Symphonie
fantastique, even after nearly two centuries. Inspired by his obsession
with actress Harriet Smithson, Berlioz takes his listener on a hypnotic
journey through the fantastic. American composers Paul Creston and
John Corigliano pick up on the same imperative to originality in
featuring the non-orchestral saxophone in a show-stopping virtuosic
concerto and inventive Promenade Overture that begins the program.
Come find out why the musicians have to memorize their parts!
“Higdon's Soprano Sax Concerto began and ended in a pastoral
mood (a la Copland's Clarinet Concerto) and featured smooth, sweet
and virtuosic playing by Timothy McAllister.” Metro Santa

Rather than radical breaks with history, musical creativity builds
upon the past. New ideas do not trample tradition so much as transform
it. Heard as one of music’s great classicists (in comparison
to contemporaries like Wagner) Brahms did not imitate his predecessors,
but imagined new soundscapes appearing from the shadows of Beethoven,
such as his-one-and-only violin concerto written for his friend
and superstar, Joseph Joachim. After extending Romanticism to its
breaking point with the adventurous harmonies in his tone poems
Salome and Elektra, Richard Strauss turned to opera and to more
traditional harmony with Der Rosenkavalier [The Knight of the Rose,
1911], which contains some of his most sublime music. Chinese American
composer Zhou Tian offers a colorful 21st century take on the tone
poem with his Palace of Nine Perfections, based on 17th century
scroll paintings by Yuan Jiang.
"His playing takes on a truly magical, communing ease and
finesse... Nakamatsu's brilliantly engaged performance paints a
portrait of a remarkably wide-ranging and stylish artist."

Verdi wrote his Requiem Mass (1874) in memory of an Italian poet
he admired, Alessandro Manzoni. This epic Mass draws upon the dramatic
and expressive resources of a double choir, orchestra and four soloists
to deliver a spiritual reading of the traditional Latin text of
the Roman Catholic mass for the dead. The five bass drum strokes
that open the “Dies Irae” [Day of Wrath], for example,
attempt to strike fear of judgment into mortal hearts, while the
combined orchestral and choral forces of the call to judgment result
in some of the loudest, acoustic music ever conceived. In contrast,
four vocal soloists offer transcendent melodies of hope, forgiveness,
and peace. The work is among the most powerful and emotional pieces
in the choral-orchestral repertory.
