2011-12 PERFORMING ARTS SERIES
With deceptively simple props, the decidedly sophisticated Seattle troupe, theater simple, delivers seriously good (in fact, award-winning) theater on a shoestring. Kicking off the 2011-12 Performing Arts Series season at the University of Nevada, Reno, the company performs the comedy-drama "52 PICK UP" on Thursday, Sept., 22 at 7:30 p.m., and Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m., and 10 p.m. at the Redfield Proscenium Theatre in the University's Church Fine Arts Building.

Opening with a deck of cards tossed into the air to fall wherever the cards might land, the production presents one couple's responses to a his-and-her life together. Simple enough, except each card holds a scene written to prompt the actors into scripted discourse and ingenious improv - on meaningful relationships no less. Chosen randomly, 52 issues unfold and interrelate to become a sage, sobering and side-splitting navigation through love (with adult language).

The award-winning, internationally acclaimed company was founded in 1990 by actors Llysa Holland and Andrew Litzky. Since then, theater simple has produced more than 1,100 performances of 42 plays, including 18 originals, throughout the United States, Canada and Australia.

The troupe's philosophy is to reduce the theatrical experience down to its elemental parts - the imagination of the actor and audience, the playwright's words and the director's vision. The company has become known for producing audacious, literate, subversive and occasionally jaw-dropping theatrical experiences.

"Experts at shoestring epics!" - The Seattle Weekly
"Powerful, mind-blowing theatre." - Edmonton Sun

SPRING ARTS EVENTS
The University School of the Arts presents a multitude of events in the dance, music, theatre and visual arts including exhibitions, lectures and performances by visiting artists and School of the Arts faculty, staff and students. Many events are free and open to the public.

Notable this spring is the Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery Biennial Valentine Auction “No Strings Attached.” This exhibition and silent auction on Feb. 10 is a fundraising event for the gallery and provides the public with the opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind works of art with a Valentine theme. The Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery also presents exhibitions throughout the semester featuring visiting artists, University faculty and students.

The University’s Department of Music is presenting a full schedule of events, and the Argenta Concert Series continues this spring with four concerts throughout the semester featuring notable guest artists, violinist Ida Kavafian and clarinetist David Shifrin, as well as featuring the Argenta Trio and University faculty.

In the Department of Theatre and Dance, following on the heels of their successful production of “Hamlet” in Original Pronunciation, the Nevada Repertory Company is presenting the world premier of “Juanita’s Statue” by Anne Garcia-Romero and “Anything Goes” by Cole Porter. The dance program will feature the choreography of guest artist Darrell Grand Moultrie and members of his company Dance Grand Moultrie in the Spring Dance Concert on May 4 and 5.

The School of the Arts is particularly excited this spring as the University celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Reno Jazz Festival. On April 26-28, 2012, the festival will host saxophonist Joe Lovano with the Collective, the Mingus Big Band and hundreds of performances by some of the best young talent in the west. Currently, organizers are asking those who attended or participated in the festival in any way throughout the past 50 years to contact the University as it collects festival memorabilia. Organizers are looking for historic photos, recordings and any memories you would like to share. The University wants to capture how the Reno Jazz Festival has affected so many musicians and fans, young and old, over these many years. If you have something to share, please contact CJ Walters at cjc@unr.edu or call her at 775-784-4895. Please join the community for this very special 50th celebration – one that comes along only once a century.

Visiting Artist Lecture
Kiel Johnson
Feb. 7, 5:30 p.m.
Wells Fargo Auditorium, Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center
Kiel Johnson's drawings and sculptures tell tales, layered narratives speak of his travels and adventures through everyday life. His works become a springboard for metaphorical investigations of the world he inhabits. Although both factual fictions and absurd scenarios, they are ultimately testaments to observation that force us to question the concrete and truthful. What at first might appear safe and secure will be, upon further inspection, very precarious. Johnson received his master of fine arts degree from California State University, Long Beach, and a bachelor of fine arts degree from University of Kansas. He has received numerous awards and honors, has had solo exhibitions around the country, and his work is included in several important public and private collections. Johnson currently lives and works in Los Angeles, Calif., and his works are represented at Mark Moor Gallery, Santa Monica, Calif. and Davison Contemporary in New York.

She is an associate professor of art at Eastern Michigan University; she received her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Dayton in2001 and received her master’s degree in painting from Northern Illinois University in 2004. "Two Collaboration: Tad Beck with Jennifer Locke and Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery with Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions Gallery”
April 12, 5:30 p.m., Wells Fargo Auditorium, Matthewson-IGT Knowledge Center
More thantwo years ago, Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery director Marjorie Vecchio curated an exhibition entitled “I Like Winners: Sport and Selfhood.” During the opening week, many of the participating artists were in town and two of them, Tad Beck and Jennifer Locke, instantly became friends and artistic collaborators. The artists felt so strongly about their collaborative relationship, they invited Vecchio to propose a curated show entitled ”Capsize” at one of the country’s most respected and established interdisciplinary art venues, the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE). That proposal was not only accepted but given high priority by the assistant director and curator of LACE, Robert Crouch, and will be installed, with Vecchio as the curator, in their Main Exhibition Space. Given that this exciting partnership started in Reno, the Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery continues the collaborative spirit and brings artists Beck and Locke, as well as the LACE curator, Crouch, to Reno for a four-day residency to produce a catalog with introductions by both Vecchio and Crouch, and a keynote essay by University of California, Riverside scholar Jennifer Doyle.
