Burning Man
Black Rock City, about two hours north of Reno. Not a Reno event — but the reason Reno's hotels, hardware stores and airport are full for two weeks either side.
Burning Man happens on the Black Rock playa near Gerlach, roughly 100 miles north-north-east of Reno. It is ticketed, sold out well in advance most years, and not something you can drive out to look at.
What it means for a Reno visitor is practical: the last week of August and the first week of September are the tightest hotel weeks of the year, RNO is at capacity, and US-447 north is busy in both directions. If you are visiting Reno for other reasons, plan around it.
If you are going: Reno is the staging city. This is where you buy water, fuel, and everything you forgot.
When things happen
- For a Reno visitor the dates that matter are the arrival week either side of the gate opening, and the exodus in the two days after the close — both fill Reno's hotels and both put heavy traffic on US-447 north.
