The biggest
little city

Reno sits at 4,500 feet where the Great Basin meets the Sierra Nevada — a 24-hour city with mountains visible from the casino floor and Lake Tahoe forty minutes up the road.

This is an independent guide to it, with a calendar resolved against Reno’s clock rather than yours.

Why Reno

Not Vegas. Not Tahoe. Somewhere considerably stranger.

Reno lost its casino monopoly to California’s tribal gaming twenty years ago and spent the time since becoming something else — a manufacturing and logistics town with a university in the middle, a revitalised Midtown, and an outdoors culture that starts fifteen minutes from downtown in almost any direction.

Tahoe day trips

The nearest shore is under an hour over the Mount Rose Highway. Staying in Reno and driving up is not a compromise — in winter it is frequently a fraction of the lakeside rate for the same weekend, and the drive is the good part.
