Sand Harbor's parking fills early on summer weekends. Arrive early or use the shuttle services that run in season.

Winter is a driving question
Storms close passes and impose chain controls with little notice, and the Mount Rose Highway is a mountain road in every sense. California chain controls exempt all-wheel drive only when all four tyres are snow-rated — book the drivetrain, not the cheapest car.
Mornings are the better half of the day
The Washoe Zephyr picks up most afternoons, so the water is calmer and clearer early. It is also when you are most likely to find parking at the popular shore access points.
