International Camel & Ostrich Races
The 67th running, in Virginia City. Camels, ostriches and zebras, raced by people who mostly should not be racing them.
This started as a newspaper hoax in the 1950s and has been running, in earnest, ever since. It is exactly as strange as it sounds and is one of the genuinely unrepeatable things about northern Nevada.
Virginia City is at 6,200 feet and half an hour up Geiger Grade from Reno. It is colder and windier than town.
