Idlewild Park

Reno's big riverside city park — a rose garden, a duck pond, playgrounds, a pool and a skate park, about a mile and a half west of downtown.

Idlewild is the park most Reno residents mean when they say 'the park'. It runs along the south bank of the Truckee west of downtown, covers about 49 acres, and is the closest thing the city has to a single all-purpose green space.

The rose garden is the part worth going out of your way for, and it is free. The rest is straightforwardly useful rather than scenic: duck ponds, two playgrounds, wide lawns, a municipal pool and a skate park.

It is on the river path, so it can be reached on foot or by bike from the Riverwalk without touching a road for most of the way. Walking the whole distance from downtown takes a while; most people drive.

Good for

  • A couple of hours with children
  • The rose garden
  • Getting onto the river path away from downtown

Worth knowing first

  • Not walkable from the casino core in any practical sense — it is a drive, a bike ride, or a long walk along the river.
  • Pool and skate park hours are seasonal and set by the city; check before making the trip for either.
