Family Activities

Reno is more family-friendly than its reputation, but it takes knowing where to look. The gaming floors are strictly 21+; almost everything else is not.

The museums do a lot of the work here. The Discovery is built for children outright, and the National Automobile Museum holds enough spectacle to carry an hour even for kids who do not care about cars.

Outdoors, the parks along the river and the Truckee whitewater park itself are the free options, and the sledding and snow-play areas above town run through winter.

The practical constraint to plan around is that casino floors are 21+ and cannot be walked through by minors — which in downtown Reno sometimes means a longer route between two places that look adjacent on a map.

Worth knowing

  • Minors may not stop or linger on a casino gaming floor in Nevada. Some resorts have routes around them; some do not.
  • Altitude and dry air affect children faster than adults. Plan the first day lighter than you would at sea level.
