Club Cal Neva

A downtown gaming floor with no hotel attached — cheap, unpretentious, and the closest thing left to what Reno's casino core used to feel like.

The Cal Neva is a casino rather than a resort: a gaming floor and food, in the middle of downtown, with no tower of rooms above it. That makes it a different kind of place from everything else on this page and the one most locals actually walk into.

It calls itself Reno's oldest casino and traces its current form to 1962. Whatever the exact lineage, it is a survivor of the era the Row properties replaced, and it has not been renovated into resemblance with them.

There is a sportsbook, and it keeps long hours — open until half an hour after the last game.

Good for

  • Cheap food and drinks downtown
  • The sportsbook
  • Seeing what the casino core was before the resorts

Worth knowing first

  • No hotel. This is somewhere you go, not somewhere you stay.
  • It is unglamorous by design. If you are looking for a resort experience, this is the wrong door.
