Nugget Casino Resort
Sparks' landmark, with Interstate 80 running on a viaduct directly over the casino floor.
The Nugget anchors Victorian Square in Sparks, about fifteen minutes east of downtown Reno, and it sponsors or hosts most of what happens on the square — including the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off over Labor Day, which is one of the largest events in the region.
Its genuinely unusual feature is structural: Interstate 80 crosses directly over the casino on a viaduct. You are gambling underneath a freeway, and from the right angle outside it is one of the odder pieces of American roadside architecture.
Rooms are mid-range and typically cheaper than equivalent downtown Reno stock, which during a big event week is the reason to consider it.
Good for
- The Rib Cook-Off and Victorian Square events
- A cheaper base during a peak Reno week
- Being near the Sparks Marina
Worth knowing first
- Fifteen minutes from downtown Reno by car, and not a walk.
- Labor Day weekend is the tightest hotel week of the year here. Book far ahead or stay in Reno.
